Settlement of New England Colonies

Tasks: 

  • Returned VA Colony quiz.
  • Began class with question: What economic and social conditions typical in Southern colonies were generally absent in New England?
  • Analyze the pattern of settlement in the New England colonies by using selected documents to determine "Was New England a City on the Hill?"
    • Defined "City on a Hill"
      • settlement that values order, community, unity, religion
    • Created a t-chart note taker and added evidence from Winthrop and Bradford documents to show how the leaders influenced the development of a "city on the hill."

    • Sourced New England town map; made observations and inferences about the settlement patterns.

Development of New England Colonies

Tasks: 

  • 17th century VA colony quiz.
  • Introduction to colonization and settlement of New England colonies.
    • Keep in mind central inquiry: Although Chesapeake and New England regions were settled largely by people of English origin, by 1700 the regions had evolved into two distinct societies.  Why did this difference in development occur?
      • NOTE: In your notes, you should be keeping track of the distinctions between the two regions.  Question asks "why" the differences occur, not "what" the differences are.
    • Small group image analysis: what are your observations? What questions do the images bring to mind?

  • Brainstorm topics for VA colony quiz (Friday 8/28).
  • Redesigned AP Test Prep: Short Answer Question - Origins of Slavery
    • Independent reading and answering of questions a - c.
    • Compared answers in small group.
    • Distinguished between answers; identifying which responses provided relevant historical evidence that showed a deeper level of analysis.  
  • Final question: What characteristics do the Southern Colonies share?

Development of Virginia Colony

Tasks: 

  • Respond to question at beginning of class: How did the cultivation of tobacco shape the Virginia colony?
    • Develop a list of characteristics that make the Virginia colony unique.
  • Debrief responses to questions submitted at the end of class on Tuesday 8/25.
    • Clarify distinction between indentured servants and enslaved labor.
    • Clarify relationship of slavery to each cause listed on worksheet from class.
  • In a well-written paragraph, respond to the question: Why was there a shift from indentured servitude to enslaved labor in the Chesapeake colonies?

    • Read documents 1 - 5 independently.
    • Small group discussion: 
      • Compare and contrast indentured servitude and slavery.
      • Review causes of why there was a shift from indentured servitude to enslaved labor, and determine how each cause connects to the development of slavery.

Introduction to Period Two: 1607 - 1754

Tasks in Class:

  • Distribute Period One tests, and allowed time to review.
  • Introduce Period Two Inquiry: Although New England and Chesapeake regions were both settled largely by people of English origin, by 1700 the regions had evolved into two distinct societies.  Why did this difference in development occur?
  • Small group work to explore England's "New World" Empire
    • Label 13 colonies on map
    • Identify the motives and methods of English colonization using notes from Kennedy, Ch. 2 p. 27 - 36
    • Create timeline of early events that define early Virginia colony, especially settlement of Jamestown.
